Abstract
1,132,641. Crimped filaments from split film; laminates. POLYMER PROCESSING RESEARCH INSTITUTE Ltd. 6 Jan., 1966 [24 Aug., 1965], No. 634/66. Headings B5B and B5N. [Also in Division B2] Crimped fibres are produced by longitudinally stretching and then splitting film the front and back surfaces of which have different heat-shrinking properties and heat treating the resulting fibres. The differential shrinking properties may be obtained by laminating two films of different chemical composition or by using film of different degrees of orientation back and front. The composite film may be obtained by calendering preformed films, melt coating a preformed film or extruding flat or tubular laminated film, preformed film being partially stretched, if necessary, before coating or laminating. Splitting of the film may be by mechanical working as in Specification 1,084,390. The final fibres have a square or rectangular section. In examples: (1) polyacrylonitrile film and film from a copolymer of acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate (both made from solution) are laminated by calendering and the laminate stretched eight times at 97 C. and then fibrillated. The fibres are then heat shrunk at 100 C. in steam to produce crimps. (2) Partially oriented and non-oriented high density polyethylene film are laminated by calendering, split into tapes, the tapes stretched eight times in steam at 105 C. and split and the resulting fibres heat shrunk at 100 C. (3) Similar to (2) but the partially oriented film being melt coated with polyethylene. (4) Polyvinyl chloride film is solution coated with a vinyl chloride acrylonitrile copolymer, the resulting binary film slit into tapes and stretched six times at 105 C. in steam and split into fibres which are heat shrunk at 75 C. (5) Laminated film from two polyethylenes of different density is made by inflating a tubular extrusion and slitting. The resulting tape is stretched six times at 105 C. in steam, split, and the resulting fibres dry heat shrunk at 100C. (6) Polyethylene and polypropylene films are laminated by calendering, slit into tape, stretched 8 times in saturated steam at 115 C. and split in fibres. The fibres are dry heat shrunk at 105 C.
