Abstract

1,132,758. Preventing brake-dive. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. 7 Aug., 1967 [12 Aug., 1966], No. 36098/66. Heading B7D. A suspension of a vehicle wheel braked by an inboard brake 16 has its virtual centre, i.e. the point about which instantaneous movement of the wheel takes place, 24, either on the wheelbase side of the wheel and above the wheel centre height or outside the wheel base and below the wheel centre height to resist brakedive or acceleration squat. In Fig. 1 a front wheel hub 10 is mounted in a hub carrier 13 secured to a kingpost 14 and is rotatable with a shaft 12 which includes a pair of universal joints, is braked by an inboard brake 16 mounted on the vehicle structure and may be driven. The kingpost is connected by ball joints 21, 22 to an inclined leading link 17 and a wishbone 18 above the wheel centre. The horizontal wishbone axis 20 and link axis 23 define the virtual centre 24. In alternatives a front wheel is supported by a telescopic strut (30), (Fig. 3, not shown), which may be sprung by a coil spring and include a damper, located laterally by a wishbone the axis (29) of which is inclined upwardly and rearwardly or by a pair of wishbones (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) the inclined axes (34, 35) of which, when projected on a longitudinal plane, intersect above the wheel centre height. Bump stops are provided to maintain the virtual centres above the wheel centres.
