Abstract

1135463 Porous coating INTERCHEMICAL CORP 9 May 1966 [16 June 1965] 20399/66 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] A method of applying a water vapour permeable coating on to a porous flexible base comprises covering a surface of the base with a thermoplastic elastomeric polyurethane uniformly distributed in a mixture of a volatile solvent for the polyurethane and a volatile liquid miscible with the solvent which liquid is a non-solvent for the polyurethane and is less volatile than the solvent and removing substantially all of the volatile mixture by evaporation. The polyurethane may be distributed as a colloidal dispersion in the volatile mixture. The product is a material made in imitation of leather comprising a flexible porous base coated with thermoplastic elastomeric polyurethane having distributed therethrough inter-connected microporous spheroidal cells of diameter 0À1 to 9 microns and having a moisture vapour transmission of 0À5 to 4À0g/10 cm2/24. The base may be a woven or non-woven textiles e.g. of nylon, polyesters, acrylics vinyl chloride copolymers, cellulosics such as rayon, cellulose acetate, cotton, wool, ramie, hemp and linen. The polyurethanes used may be prepared from long chain diols such as linear polyesters and polyethers and diisocyanates, and may include chain extenders such as glycols, diamines, aminoalcohols and water. Examples of polyesters, polyethers, diiosocyanates and chain extenders and of specific polyester- and polyetherurethanes are given. Examples of solvents and non-solvents are also given. The coating may be applied to the base as a colloidal dispersion at 30 to 75‹C., to a thickness of 20 to 200 mils. Films of the polyesterurethanes may be prepared by casting the coatings on to say a glass or steel support and thereafter stripping the film from the support.
