Abstract
1,135,920. Container closures. PAUL SCHULZE & CO. G.m.b.H. 20 Sept., 1967 [3 June, 1967], No. 42886/67. Heading B8T. A plastics closure comprises a base ring 1 which may be forced on to the beaded mouth 13 of a container and has a flexible bellows 2 which can be telescoped into the container, Fig. 2, and either has at its end a tubular spout, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), or a rotary plug valve 4, a rigid plastics cap 16 being retained on the ring when the bellows 2 has been pushed inwards. To open the closure, a part of the cap 16 is torn or cut away, to make the remainder of the cap resilient, when it can be extracted from the base ring 1. As shown, the edge 15 of the cap 16 is pushed into a groove 14 around the top of the base ring 1. Alternatively, the edge 15 of the cap may be held on the base ring (1a), Fig. 4 (not shown), by an encircling metal ring (18) of C-shaped cross-section. As shown, the rotary plug valve 4 has a handle 7, and inlet and outlet openings 5, 6; the latter may initially be sealed by a tear-out disc. The cap 16 is formed with a raised housing 19 which accepts the plug valve 4, and has a small extension to receive the end 8 of the plug valve handle and retain the valve in its closed position. The top of the raised housing 19 has parallel lines of weakness (23), Fig. 5 (not shown), and a tear-tab (21). To open the closure from the Fig. 2 position, the tear-tab (21) is grasped, and the top of the raised housing 19 is pulled out. The edges 15 of the disc 16 are then squeezed radially inwards and released from the base ring groove 14. Finally, the bellows 2 is pulled out. In a modification, the rigid cap has a flat top and a tubular downwards extension (27), Figs. 8, 9 (not shown) internally threaded so that it can be screwed on to the outside of a tubular spout (28) on the bellows (2), and surrounded by a circular tear-out strip. To open the closure, a tear-tab (30) is grasped to pull out the tear strip, thus freeing the centre of the cap, which is unscrewed by means of a handle (31).
