Abstract
1,136,095. Buckles. W. H. CHEETHAM & SONS Ltd. 25 July, 1966 [28 Oct., 1965], No. 45621/65. Heading E2A. [Also in Division A3] A releasable fastener for releasably connecting together two strap end portions 11a, 11b comprises two separable leaf members 12, 13 for respective connection to the two strap end portions and a separable abutting connection between said leaf members for permitting their relative movement to and from a closed operative attitude in which they are disposed in face to face relation, one of which members has an aperture at a location spaced from said connection and the other of which members has an upstanding part 18 to be received in and to protrude through said aperture in the closed attitude of the two members and to be extracted from the aperture in opening movement of the two members the protruding portion of the upstanding parts having an aperture for the removable reception of a keeper 20 preventing said extraction and opening movement the two leaf members being provided with attachment means 21, 26 for the respective strap end portion so disposed that tension on the strap end portions when the members are in the closed attitude tends to hold the separable connection engaged and wherein the separable connection permits the two members to separate when the upstanding part is extracted from its aperture by said opening movement. In the construction shown the separable connection is a separable hinge for permitting relative hinging movement of the two leaf members to and from the operative attitude which hinge comprises a partial socket 22 on one member having a mouth directed away from the aforesaid location and a pivot on the other member receivable in the socket and removable therefrom through the mouth by relative displacement between the two members subsequent to the extraction of said part from its aperture. The attachment means 21 of the member 12 is a pin around which the strap end portion 11 a is looped and the attachment means of the member 13 is a cross bar 26 defined by two slots, the strap end portion 11b being looped around the cross bar 26. The keeper is of strap-like form and is permanently attached by a rivet to the member 12 but other forms of keeper can be used in which case the aperture in the part 18 is appropriately shaped. The fastener is usable for belts, collars or safety harness and in Fig. 8 is shown in use as part of a safety harness for use by a child occupying the back seat of a motor car. As shown the harness comprises a lap belt 11 the two halves of the strap of which extend forwardly from two rear anchorage brackets 30 and have their end portions looped around the bar and pin of the fastener as previously described; the two parts of each loop are held together by a three-bar buckle 36. The rear end portion of each half of the lap belt 11 is passed through a slot 35 in the appropriate bracket 30 and is turned back on itself and secured by stitching or at least one rivet. Attached to each of the brackets 30 is a seat backed restraining strap 31. The straps 31 are adapted to extend up in front of the back rest squab of the seat, their end portions being secured to a third anchorage bracket 32 adapted to be attached to the structure of the vehicle behind the lower edge of the seat; alternatively the bracket can be attached to the rear window shelf of the vehicle. Instead of the single bracket 32 shown two separate brackets can be used; alternatively a single length of strap can be used instead of the two seat belt straps 31 the single strap being passed through a slot 33 in a bracket 32. One of the straps 31 is secured to its bracket 30 by having its end portion looped through a slot 37 in the bracket and secured by stitching or other means; the other strap 31 is secured to its bracket 30 by means of a connecting member 38 of web material which has one end portion passed through the slot 37 and secured by stitching or other means and its other end portion passed through two oblong rings 39 and turned back on itself and secured by stitching or other means; the lower end portion of the strap 31 is passed through the two rings 39 so that its length is adjustable. Two shoulder straps are provided which are connected to the straps 31 by three-bar buckles 43′ and to the straps of the lap belt by three-bar buckles 41 which are each provided with an additional slot 42 through which the shoulder straps are looped, the loops being secured by three-bar buckles 43.
