Abstract
1,136,571. Radar. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON – HOTCHKISS BRANDT. 4 Jan., 1966 [8 Jan., 1965], No. 355/66. Heading H4D. In a ranging and velocity-measuring radar a transmitter is phase modulated by a coding signal and the coding signal consists of a symmetrical square wave (“course”) code g(o), and a disconnectable pseudo-random (“fine”), code F(o) generated by respective units 30, 31; the receiver includes a demodulator 6 fed from a multiplier connected to the coarse code generator and a delayed output, disconnectable in conjunction with the above disconnection, of the fine code generator, and the receiver also includes a demodulator 7 fed via a frequency doubler 5 with the coarse code; the final demodulated signal is fed via a lowfrequency amplifier 8 to audible and/or visual display means; and the transmitter and receiver have a common orientable aerial 10. The fine code generator is a shift register Fig. 2 (c) (not shown), and the coarse code produces 0 or 180 degrees R.F. carrier phase shift, the period of the coarse code square wave being four times that corresponding to maximum range. The transmitter incorporates a three-port circulator and a diode switch shunting a guide forming one of the circulator arms: when the diode is rendered conductive the R.F. phase is shifted by 180 degrees, Fig. 4 (not shown). In the R.F. “head” the echo signal is fed together with a counterpart of the unmodulated transmitter carrier to a coherent phase demodulator and the video output therefrom is fed to demodulator 6, which consists of a multiplier and band-pass filter, to give a sine wave of amplitude varying as where R is target range and R max is maximum range, and of phase proportional to R/2R max ; the demodulator 7 consists of a multiplier and a Doppler-shift filter, Fig. 5 (not shown).
