Abstract

1,137,894. Automatic temperature control systems. SUNBEAM CORP. March 4, 1966 [Oct.6, 1965], No.9692/66. Heading G3R. A temperature control circuit admitting only complete half cycles of power to a heater 14 comprises in direct heat conducting relation to the heater a NTC thermistor 26 in series with an adjustable resistor 24 and capacitor 20 forming a phase shifting circuit. The voltage at junction 28 fires through a diode 34 a thyristor 16 when this voltage exceeds the threshold value. A second thermistor 18 stabilizes the thyristor 6 firing point with rise in temperature. A diode 30 shunts the control circuit on negative half cycles. A resistor 36 compensates for overshoot by providing a standing current drain through thermistor 26. An additional thermistor (64 Fig. 4, not shown) connected in series with diode 34 and in loose thermal relation with the heater may also compensate against overshoot when the circuit is initially energized. Other circuit configurations are described in the Specification. The circuit may be applied to the control of an electric iron or a liquid bath. An R. F. filter 62 may be connected across the input terminals to by-pass transients to prevent spurious operation of the thyristor.
