Abstract

1,143,639. Plastic jacketed hair clip. N. L. SOLOMON. 20 July, 1966 [2 March, 1966], No. 32591/66. Heading A4V. A plastic jacketed metal hair holding device, e.g. a bobby pin, comprises a strip of flexible metal having a pair of flexible arms 48 and 50 and having a continuous extruded plastic jacket which is formed from rigid plastic having a wall thickness of about .001 to .0055 inch and which preferably does not vary in thickness by more than .001 inch. The plastic coating material may suitably be a polyamide (nylon), polycarbonate, fluorocarbon or acetal resin. The hair clip is made by passing wire from a payout reel through shaping or straightening rollers or dies and on through a cleaning and degreasing path and a heating region, from which it is fed to an extruder; the wire is passed through the die of the extruder coaxially with a surrounding layer of hard plastic material such as nylon which is simultaneously forced through the die; the coated filament leaving the die orifice is cooled, crimped to form the corrugations 31, cut off into lengths and bent into the desired bobby pin formation; the exposed cut ends of the clips are coated with plastic by dipping or spraying and the clips are passed through a heater where the ends are curved and the metal is tempered.
