Abstract

1,147,376. Testing for flaws. NOVO INDUSTRIAL CORP. Nov.4, 1966, No.49475/66. Heading G1S. A method and apparatus for detecting flaws in an air-permeable body 10 such as an air filter element comprises a ring spray nozzle 24 for passing air through successively exposed contiguous areas of the body 10 so that the air impinges against a receiving surface arranged inside the body, the air carrying a fluorescent agent which is carried through any defects in the body and is deposited on the receiving surface so as to indicate the existence and the location of such defects. In the embodiment described the body under test is a cylindrical air filter which is mounted on a cylindrical receiving surface 64 and covered by a shroud 20 having a number of windows or scanning slots 22 around its perimeter to expose reduced areas of the filter. The inside of the air filter is maintained at a reduced pressure to encourage the flow of the fluorescent agent through any defects in the filter. In order to expose the entire area of the filter successively the shroud is raised together with the spray nozzle by means of a piston and cylinder 39 connected to the shroud by a line 46.
