Abstract
1,147,585. Molecular beams. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 11 March, 1968 [18 July, 1967], No. 11809/68. Heading G6P. In a neutral particle beam, for use in thermonuclear reactors, low velocity contaminant gas atoms are removed by irradiation of the beam with monochromatic e.m. radiation directed transversely across the beam. The charged particle beam 11, of deuterons, protons or tritons passes through housing 13, where the beam particles are neutralized, through collimating slits 18 and 9, into housing 31. The contaminant gas atoms are removed from the beam in 31 and the uncontaminated beam enters a thermonuclear device after passing through apertures 37, 38. Neutralization of the beam particles is effected by sodium vapour 21 in 13, by charge interchange. Some of the sodium vapour atoms mingle with the beam and stream into housing 31. The contaminated beam is irradiated transversely by the sodium lamps 32 the light from which is absorbed by sodium atoms in the beam. The sodium light protons impart momentum to the sodium atoms which move from the beam in the direction 36 while at the same time re-radiating the absorbed radiation in random direction. Radiation is not absorbed by the beam atoms.
