Abstract
1,147,688. Superconductor devices. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. 19 Aug., 1966 [21 Aug., 1965], No. 37389/66. Heading H1K. In a superconductive generator in which a non-superconducting region traversed by magnetic flux of greater than critical strength moves through a superconductor lamina to induce a current therein, a superconducting return conductor is provided near the lamina, carrying opposing current to counteract the disturbing effects of the induced current on the initiating magnetic field. Fig. 2 shows a plurality of niobium-zirconium wires connected at one end to the top region of a niobium sheet 21. A magnetic field is caused to traverse the sheet and wires to produce a travelling non-superconductive region in the sheet but not in the wires, since the latter are made of higher critical field material. The travelling field induces a current output in leads 23, 24 connected to the opposite ends of the sheet and the wires, which is applied to a superconductor coil or other load. In alternative embodiments, the indium-zirconium wires are replaced by a niobium-zirconium sheet (Fig. 1, not shown) or by strips inlet into the sheet of lower critical field material and insulated therefrom except at one end. In another embodiment (Fig. 4A) the lamina is constituted by a niobium cylinder 41 which is traversed by a magnetic field between rotatable soft iron plate 42 and the inner surface of soft iron cylinder 44; the cylinder 44 is provided with slots 46 which enclose niobium strips 47 arranged as the return conductors. The magnetic circuit is such that strips 47 are subjected to a lower magnetic field than the appropriate portion of cylinder 41 so that 47 can be made of the same material as 41 and yet remain superconducting while the portion of 41 goes non- superconductive. Slots can be provided in cylinder 41 to avoid undersized eddy current. The hard superconductor could alternatively consist of niobium tin and the soft of lead.
