Abstract
1,152,648. Gas meters. GENERAL PRECISION SYSTEMS Inc. Dec.22, 1967 [May 5, 1967], No.58271/67. Heading G1R. A gas flow computer device, for correcting the gas flow through a flowmeter to a standard pressure and temperature, is connected to a gas flow meter output shaft by a shaft 10, coupled to counter 12 and an input disc 14 of a ball and disc integrator 16 in turn coupled to a second or “output” ball and disc integrator 52 which, through a shaft 76, drives a counter 78 which indicates the amount of gas passed through the flowmeter after corrections have been made for the temperature and pressure variations. The shaft 76 may also be coupled to other output devices such as a rotatable magnet 80 which actuates contacts 82 or to an analogue to digital encoder connected to a remote recording station. Gas is fed from the gas main through a pipe 24 to a bellows 22 so that any alteration in gas pressure will cause the bellows 22 to partially rotate an arm 28 about a pivot 32 to move a bell crank lever 34, provided at the end of one arm with a roller 40 bearing against a cam 42 and at the end of the other arm coupled to a pinion 36, to rotate the pinion 36 to move a rack 38 coupled to the transmission balls 18 of integrator 16. The movement of the balls 18, by the rack 38, radially outwards or inwards of the rotating disc 14 causes an increase or decrease in the rotation of cylinder 20 in accordance with the pressure alteration of the gas flow which is indicated by a pointer 44 on a scale 46. Gas is also fed from the gas mains through a pipe 58 to bellows 60 so that any alteration in gas temperature will cause the bellows 60 to move a bell crank 64 to rotate a pinion 66 to move a rack 68 and hence the radial position of transmission balls 56 relative to the disc 54 which is driven by the cylinder 52, directly coupled to the cylinder 20, through the balls 56. The temperature alterations are indicated by a pointer 74 on a scale 76. The cam 42 Fig.3 (not shown), is of strip metal and its shape can be altered by a number of screws to take into account non-linearities in the bellows 22 and associated linkages. A similar cam 72, engaged by a roller 70, provided on the bell crank arm 64 can be adjusted to take into account non- linearities of the bellows 60 and associated linkages.
