Abstract
1,152,811. Control of D.C. motors. RELIANCE ELECTRIC & ENG. CO. 12 Jan., 1968 [16 Jan., 1967], No. 1968/68. Heading H2J. [Also in Division G3] A D.C. motor, having armature 18 and field winding 50, is supplied from A.C. source 10 through bridge rectifier 16, a silicon controlled rectifier 20 being connected in series with the armature. A triggering circuit for the rectifier comprises a capacitor 54 a breakdown diode 56, and pulse transformer 58, as well as a diode 112 for discharging the capacitor after each conducting period of the rectifier 20. The charge on the capacitor 54 is determined by transistor 62 which acts as an earth return for the capacitor and whose base bias is controlled by potentiometer 68, increased or decreased conduction of the transistor producing high or low speed operation of the motor, respectively. The speed of the motor is stabilized by feeding back a signal representing the armature voltage through a filter network to the emitter of the transistor 62. A signal representing the armature current is developed across resistor 102 and is sensed by transistor 103 which is adapted to shunt the potentiometer 68. As the armature current increases, the transistor 62 becomes less conductive to reduce the firing-period of the rectifier 20. The starting current of the motor is restricted by the initial charging of capacitor 90 to reduce the amount of current for turning- on the transistor 62. When the capacitor 90 is fully charged, it is no longer effective for controlling the motor.
