Abstract

1,152,988. Variable pitch propellers. AVCO CORP. 11 Oct., 1966 [19 Oct., 1965], No. 45446/66. Heading B7V. [Also in Division F2] The pitch of a ship’s propeller blades is varied by a screw-and-nut mechanism 44, 49 which axially moves a plunger 39 connected by rods 61 to propeller blade shafts 60 so that axial movement of the plunger 39 rotates the shafts 60 to vary the pitch of the blades. When the propeller is rotating at an adjusted pitch the screw 44 and nut 49 are driven from the hub 31 through slip couplings 42, 51 and thus no relative motion occurs. To vary the pitch in one direction a brake 58 holds the nut 49 whilst the screw is driven through the coupling 42 and thus screws through the nut 49 and moves the plunger 39 axially. To vary the pitch in the opposite direction a brake 56 holds a disc 48 keyed to the screw 44 whilst the nut is driven through the slip coupling 51 to move the screw and plunger 39 in the opposite direction. The brakes 56, 58 are fluid pressure operated.
