Titanium tetrachloride in steel hopper 1 has the level thereof estimated by means of the source 4 of gamma radiation which passes through the hopper and through the material in the hopper and records itself on geiger counter 5. The geiger counter therefore registers the moment when the level of the material falls below the level of the rays. The material forms deposits 8 on the walls of the hopper. Air may be blown around the windows 11 and 12 to keep them free from material, and the windows may be vibrated by means of vibrators for the same purpose.
