Abstract

1,155,768. Flame resistant rigid foams. NISSHIN BOSEKI K.K. 15 Feb., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966; 27 Dec., 1966; 30 Dec., 1966], No. 7249/67. Headings C3C and C3R. Flame resistant, rigid foams are prepared by reacting (A) an aromatic polyisocyanate having no ortho-substituent, (B) an active hydrogencontaining compound having a M.W. of more than 300 and having at least two functional groups, (C) a foaming agent, (D) a catalyst for the trimerization of isocyanate groups, (E) optionally a surfactant and (F) optionally a flame retardant, the proportions of the components being such as to satisfy the relationships and wherein the suffix ” e ” represents the number of chemical equivalents of each of the components and the suffix “w” ” represents the weight of each of the components, the factors Ce, De, Ee and Fe being eliminated from the above equation when components C, D, E and F respectively are not reactive with component A. The polyisocyanate (A) may be any of those used conventionally in the art as long as it contains no ortho substituent. Suitable polyisocyanates are 4,41-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and polymethylene polyphenyl isocyanate. The active hydrogen containing compound (B) may be a polyether or polyester polyol or a dimer acid. Conventional foaming agents which are non-reactive volatile organic solvents, compounds generating a gas on heating and reactive foaming agents may be used. The catalyst (D) may be an organic strong base or salt thereof, a tertiary amine cocatalyst combination, a Friedel Crafts catalyst, a basic salt of an organic weak acid, an alkali metal oxide, alcoholate, phenolate, hydroxide or carbonate, an anion compound from nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, sulphur and selenium, an epoxide or a mono-substituted monocarbamic ester. Surfactant (E) may be a silicone or non- ionic surfactant. The flame retardant may be antimony oxide or a halogen and/or phosphoruscontaining organic compound.
