Abstract
1,160,829. Altering physical structure. CONTIMET G.m.b.H. 8 June, 1967 [19 July, 1966], No. 26579/67. Heading B3V. [Also in Division C7] The grain structure of titanium and its alloys is refined to improve forgeability by forging the metal below its beta transformation temperature prior to and subsequent to heat treating the metal above this temperature to cause recrystallization. – Forging may.. be initiated above the transformation temperature but the majority of reduction is carried out below this temperature to permit subsequent recrystallization. The forging is preferably performed at 1600-1750‹ F. and the recrystallization treatment, up to 150‹ F. above the transformation temperature. Examples are described for treating pure titanium, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al- 2.5Sn and Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V, the initial forging temperature ranging from 1650 to 2050
