Abstract

1,172,466. Electro-deposition of patterns of organic resins. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. July 2, 1968 [July 3, 1967], No.31446/68. Heading C7B. A design is coated on to an electrically conducting workpiece by (a) positioning the workpiece over a vessel having a peripheral lip defining the design outline, the vessel containing an aqueous dispersion of an electro-depositable film-forming resin and a counter-electrode which is immersed in the dispersion when the vessel is inverted, (b) providing a water-tight seal between the vessel lip and the workpiece, (c) inverting the workpiece and vessel and applying D.C. between the counter-electrode and workpiece to cause coating of the latter, and (d) re-inverting the vessel and workpiece and breaking the seal. As described the dispersion consists of an anodically depositable pigmented polycarboxylic acid resin paint as in Specification 972,169 and is identical with that of Example 1 of Specification 1,030,204, deposition being effected with an applied potential of 50 to 500 volts. The paint deposit is cured e.g. by baking, and may be overcoated with a transparent lacquer by spraying. Simultaneous or successive coating on different areas of the workpiece may be effected by electrodeposition with the same or different paints and may be effected to completion for the applied voltage which is chosen lower for a second paint deposition within the first coated area to avoid over-coating of the cured paint. The seal between the workpiece and paint-containing vessel may be effected by connecting a vacuum to the space between the paint dispersion and the workpiece before inversion, by providing an electromagnet in the vessel lip, or by mechanical seals including inflatable seals.
