Abstract
1,172,529. Casting composite articles; welding by pressure. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. 28 Oct., 1966 [1 Dec., 1965], No. 48393/66. Headings B3F and B3R. In a method of manufacturing a sole-plate for a flat-iron a shaped laminated stock material comprising a stainless steel layer 3, an aluminium layer 5 and a bonding layer (7), (Fig. 2, not shown), is placed in a mould die cavity, heated until the bonding layer melts and then casting thereon an aluminium base layer by injecting molten metal into the die cavity. The melted bonding layer (7) combines with the injected molten aluminium to form an alloy layer 19. The bonding layer (7) may be a braze alloy or a solder alloy or may be substantially zinc. The laminated stock material is formed by solid-phase metallurgical bonding. In a reference to prior art a metal base is cast on to a stainless steel layer that has a rough surface formed by spraying with a layer of metal such as nickel to improve adhesion of the cast-on base.
