1,172,798. Treating cellulose, starch or polyvinyl alcohol. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 27 May, 1968 [27 May, 1967; 14 Aug., 1967; 4 April, 1968], No. 25245/68. Headings C3A, C3P and C3U. [Also in Division D2] High M.W. polymers containing OH groups are treated with cyanamide and an aldehyde in the presence of a secondary or tertiary amine at pH 5-9, preferably in an aqueous medium. In examples, formaldehyde, benzaldehyde or acetaldehyde are used with di- or triethanolamine. Exemplified substrates are cellulose, PVA, potato starch and the skeleton substances of beech and pine woods.
