Abstract
1,173,161. Photo-electric monitoring of crucible wall. IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd. Aug. 11, 1967 [Aug.24, 1966], No.37985/66. Heading G1A. In an apparatus and a method for indicating excessive melting of the crucible wall in the consumable electrode arc melting of metal, radiation emitted by the wall or by metal liquefied or vaporized during the process is monitored. Radiation from the wall may be segregated mechanically, or at least one wavelength or band of wavelengths may be chosen from the emission spectrum of the wall material. Alternatively the vapour within the crucible may be extracted and fed to an electrical discharge cell the optical radiation from which may be selectively monitored. Radiation from a port 5 viewing the annulus between the charge and the crucible is applied through lenses and slits to a photo-cell 10 which may be a photo-multiplier and the output is fed to a bridge 13 for comparison with a reference voltage, or with a voltage from one or more other spectral lines from the same area selected to compensate for variations which are common to the metal being melted and the crucible metal. The bridge unbalance is measured in a unit 20, and is integrated in a unit 22 for different selectable periods e.g. 1/10, 1 or 10 seconds and an alarm 30, 31, and possibly furnace shut-down equipment are operated if the integrated figure exceeds the corresponding standard injected by unit 26. The beams from viewer 5 may be split by an inclined mirror system, a refractory prism, or a diffraction grating and in the case of the mirrors fed to a pair of photo-multipliers through a respective pair of filters. The Specification describes the melting of titanium in a two stage process, and the use of copper, stainless steel, or aluminium, water-cooled crucibles. An inert gas may be injected in the vicinity of the viewing ports or the ports may be segments of a rotatable window to prevent fogging, and marker elements such as cadmium may be introduced into the wall for recognition by the monitoring system.
