Abstract

1,173,235. Compression moulding. CINCINNATI SHAPER CO. 12 April, 1967 [18 April, 1966], No. 16801/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division G1] In a compacting press having a main ram R, Fig. 1, a fixed die platen D, two floating load bearing platens 18, 19 and a punch 20, at least the ram and floating platens are provided with force transducers from which an indication of the ”’density of the compacted workpiece is obtained. The ram, platens and punch are each provided with a force sensing transducer 10, 10a, 10b, 10c in the form of a flanged metal cylinder 10, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), provided with four strain gauges 14, 15, opposite pairs, orientated to sense longitudinal compression and circumferential expansion of the cylinder 10, being connected in opposition in a Wheatstone bridge. The output of each bridge may be connected via switch 30, Fig. 5, and an amplifier to a peak voltage indicator and meter 32 which indicates the total load or the partial loads applied by the individual platens. The output from the amplifier is also supplied to a density control circuit which energizes one of two relays should the signal exceed or fall short of a maximum or minimum predetermined voltage corresponding to maximum and minimum permissible densities of the compacted workpiece. These relays, when energized, may operate a visual or audible alarm or may actuate a gating device which causes those workpieces of which the densities lie either side of the preset limits to be ejected into two separate channels and those having acceptable densities into a third channel, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown). An overload detector 35 is also provided to shut the press off should the load provided by the main ram exceed a preset value. To calibrate the circuitry for operation a calibration bridge is provided which is connected to the output circuitry via switch 31. In the ” zero ” position of switch 31, the amplifier is automatically balanced to zero an automatic balancing circuit 34. In position ” Cal. Meter ” the meter 32 is calibrated to read the applied load in tons, and in position ” Cal. limits ” the maximum and minimum limits of the density control circuit 33 may be adjusted.
