Abstract
1,183,251. Continuous casting-machines; making strip. OGLEBAY NORTON CO. 21 Feb., 1967, No. 8198/67. Headings B3A and B3F. In the continuous casting of a metal bar 32, a mould 10 is mounted on a movable platform 11 oscillated by hydraulic or pneumatic jacks 17 and also vibrated by devices 19, the force of the jacks 17 being controlled so that during the upward movement of the mould 10 normal friction is overcome, but the force is not capable of breaking the thin skin formed initially in the mould, but during abnormal friction conditions the mould is carried downwards by the movement of the bar 32 and pressure fluid is expelled from the jacks into a pressure accumulator (80), (Fig. 4, not shown). The forces are controlled and recorded by a pressure regulator (71) and strain gauges and oscillographs 23, 44. A limit switch SW1 is operated by the platform 11 at its limit of travel to stop the winch 42 controlling the pouring and the pinch rolls 26 withdrawing the bar 32. The mould 10 comprises resiliently mounted side walls (48) and end walls (54) provided with liquid coolant passageways (60), (63), (Fig. 2, not shown). A layer of fused glass may be added on top of the molten metal in the mould 10 to pass around the skin of the bar 32 to reduce friction forces. The pinch rolls 26 reduce the cross-section of the bar 32 by at least 25% to remove the piping (32a), (Fig. 3, not shown). In an example described the vibrating frequency is 500-3600 vibrations per minute at an amplitude of 0À005 to 0À020 inch, whereas the oscillations are at a frequency of 60-100 times per minute at an amplitude of 0À25 to 1À0 inch.
