1,197,160. Oxidizing uranium surfaces. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. April 23, 1969 [May 21, 1968], No.20864/69. Heading C7U. [Also in Division B3] A uranium billet has its surface oxidized prior to deformation by exposure to air or preferably by an acidic aqueous permanganate solution. The permanganate concentration is from 4 to 6% and any alkali permanganate may be used. The acid may be nitric or hydrochloric. The solution is heated to 80‹C. to 100‹C. and the billet immersed for preferably 5 to 10 minutes.
