Abstract
1,199,312. Polymerizing tetrafluoroethylene. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 22 Aug., 1967, No. 38689/67. Headings C3G and C3P. Tetrafluoroethylene is polymerized by feeding monomeric tetrafluoroethylene to a polymerization vessel and into contact with particles of a finely divided solid polymer consisting of at least a predominant amount by weight of tetrafluoroethylene and not more than a minor amount by weight of another ethylenically unsaturated fluoro compound copolymerizable therewith, suspended in water; withdrawing a liquid body comprising the polymer suspended in water from the vessel and then passing it through a field of high energy ionizing radiation of an intensity of at least 40,000 rads per hour and subjecting the polymer therein to irradiation with a dose effective to initiate polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene upon contacting and interacting the monomer with irradiated polymer; feeding a first portion of the suspension of the irradiated polymer to a filtering means and separating the polymer from the water, the water being passed from there to the vessel while a second portion of the suspension of the irradiated polymer is recirculated to the vessel where it is contacted with tetrafluoroethylene, the process being continued while feeding the tetrafluoroethylene to the vessel at a rate not substantially greater than it is consumed in the polymerization reaction. The polymer separated from the water may be contacted with additional tetrafluoroethylene and polymerization allowed to proceed until the rate of polymerization becomes negligible. Suitable polymers are homopolymers of tetrafluoroethylene and copolymers with hexafluoropropylene. The monomer may be linked to increase the parent chain length and/or grafted.
