Abstract
1,199,376. Inorganic fibre reinforced resins. MONSANTO CO. 23 Oct., 1968 [24 Jan., 1968; 6 Feb., 1968], No. 50415/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C7] A resin article reinforced with aligned inorganic fibres is formed by extruding a dispersion of inorganic fibres in a film-forming organic colloid medium through a narrow orifice into a coagulant for the medium, burning off the organic constituents of the coagulated product and impregnating the residue with an epoxide resin. Preferably the coagulated fibres are bound together, either by inherent stickiness or using an adhesive, e.g. an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, starch, carboxymethylcellulose or gum tragacanth to form a moulding lay up. The reinforcing fibre may be any refractory material of fibre length from 5-7500 microns and aspect ratio of 5 to 1000, preferred materials being silicon carbide or nitride. The film-forming organic colloid medium may be a solution of any cellulose resin, e.g. cellulose, cellulose acetate or cellulose triacetate or a rayon forming compound such as cuprammonium cellulose. The carbonaceous material is burnt out in two stages, heating at first to a temperature below 400 C. and then heating to a temperature above 500 C. and below that at which the inorganic material is affected. The inorganic residue is impregnated with liquid epoxy resin, the resin is advanced to the “B” stage, the soft solid is shaped and the resin is finally cured.
