Abstract

1,199,570. Photographic colloid compositions. GEVAERT-AGFA N. V. Oct.16, 1967 [Oct. 31, 1966], No.48614/66. Heading G2C. A water-insoluble or slightly water-soluble photographic ingredient is incorporated into a hydrophilic colloid composition by (1) dissolving the ingredient in a mixture of solvents, which are dissolved in each other, the mixture comprising (a) at least one water-immiscible or sparingly water-miscible solvent having a solubility in water of less than 25% at room temperature, a boiling point in the range of 60 to 130‹ C. and a sufficiently high vapour pressure so that it can be removed from a hydrophilic colloid composition by applying thereto a reduced pressure of 500 to 10 mm Hg at a temperature of 25 to 80‹C., and (b) at least one water-miscible solvent which is miscible with water in all proportions and having a boiling point lower than 250‹C., (2) dispersing the ingredient solution thereby obtained in an aqueous composition containing the hydrophilic colloid and (3) removing substantially all of the said waterimmiscible or sparingly water-miscible solvent(s) and the said water-miscible solvent(s) thereby leaving the photographic ingredient uniformly distributed in the hydrophilic colloid composition. The method may be used for incorporating filter, antihalation and sensitizing dyes, colour couplers, and mask-forming, stabilizing and developing agents, particularly into gelatine, preferably using a wetting agent to aid dispersion. The colloid compositions formed may be used for coating or mixed with a coating solution, e. g. of silver halide emulsion.
