Abstract
1,199,671. Making wigs. E. KÍHLER. 17 April, 1968 [29 April, 1967], No. 18147/68. Heading A4V. A wig comprising a support consisting of a transparent flexible synthetic resin foil moulded to the shape of the head, and hairs, the ends of which are unknotted and entirely embedded in the foil, is made by (i) inserting the ends of hairs, or a portion between the ends, through a pierceable outer shell mounted on a male mould of the head, into a pierceable material beneath the shell, temporarily anchoring the hairs to the outer face of the shell and then removing it from the mould and pierceable material so that the ends or loops of the hairs project from the inner surface of the shell; (ii) then mounting a thin piece of textile material on the mould, coating the outer surface of this material and the inner surface of the shell with a synthetic resin and pressing the shell down on to the textile layer; (iii) then allowing the resin to harden to form a foil, releasing the temporary anchoring, and removing the shell so that the hairs are drawn through the shell and remain attached to the textile material to form a wig which is subsequently removed from the mould. The mould is cast from a female impression of the bald area of the head. The hairs are inserted through the pierceable shell, which is preferably made of polyvinyl chloride, by means of a forked needle or a needle having a rounded end with a shallow groove therein. The pierceable material beneath the shell may be a layer of similar substance to the shell, or else the mould itself may be pierceable, in which case it may be cast from silicone rubber. The hairs are temporarily anchored to the shell by a layer of textile coated with adhesive. The textile base of the wig support is preferably a glass fibre material. Before the resin is applied to the inner surface of the shell, the hair ends projecting from this surface may be laid over to give the outward hair lengths a natural slope; alternatively the hairs may be initially inserted at a suitable angle. This method is especially applicable for making patch wigs or toupÚes.
