Abstract

1,205,059. Phase-shifters. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. 5 Oct., 1967 [30 Dec.. 1966]. No. 45494/67. Heading H1W. A diode-controlled phase-shift network comprises one or more quarter-wave sections of transmission line each terminated at either end by a plurality of shunt reactive networks containing the diodes. The network shown is suitable for binary digital control and comprises two quarter-wave sections 36a, 36b forming part of a transmission line (e.g. a strip-line) 36. Section 36a is coupled to earth at either end by shunt networks comprising diodes 42, 43 respectively in series with inductors 44, 45, a source of bias voltage #3 being connected to the junction between inductors 44, 45 and respective isolating capacitors 46, 47. When the diodes are turned ” on ” they act as resistors and the shunt circuits present an inductive reactance. When turned ” off” the diodes behave as capacitors and the shunt circuits become capacitive. Values are selected to provide a phase-shift difference of 22À5 degrees between the two conditions. Section 36b is similarly provided with shunt networks 56, 58 and 57, 59 chosen to provide a switchable phase delay of 45 degrees. In addition to those described, the sections 36a, 36b are also terminated at both ends by shunt circuits comprising a series combination of a capacitor and an inductor, the diodes being arranged to shunt the inductor when in a conductive state, network 48, 84, 50 being typical. The parameters of the circuit are so chosen that, when diode 50 is turned ” on “, it provides a relatively high capacitive reactance and when the diode is turned off” ” it presents a low capacitive reactance. Application of control voltages to terminals #1, #2, #3, #4 selects phase-shift ” bits ” respectively equal to 5À6 degrees, 11À25 degrees, 22À5 degrees and 45 degrees.
