Abstract

1,205,187. Separation of trioxane from a mixture of trioxane and polyoxymethylene. SOC. CHIMIQUE DES CHARBONNAGES. 5 June, 1969 [10 June, 1968], No. 28438/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Trioxane is separated from a mixture of trioxane and polyoxymethylene by treating the mixture with gaseous trioxane or a mixture of at least one inert gas and trioxane in which the partial pressure of trioxane is at least 60 mm. of mercury, the trioxane or the mixture thereof with the inert gas being at a temperature of from 65‹ to 130‹ C. In a preferred embodiment the process is performed in a vertical tower into which the polymer is inserted for extraction and in which a flow of gas melts and subsequently evaporates the remaining monomer. The temperature of the incoming gases is adjusted to 120‹ C. by a heat exchanger at the bottom of the tower. After becoming charged with trioxane, the gas flows into a cyclone where the drops melted at the beginning of the process are collected, and then into a condenser where some of the trioxane vapours condense. The gas leaving the condenser is taken up by a superheated fan and recycled at the head of the tower.
