Abstract
1,205,309. Exchange systems; data transmission. SIEMENS A.G. 18 Oct., 1968 [19 Oct., 1967], No. 49400/68. Headings H4K and H4P. In a data processing system messages to be transmitted are compiled as an arbitrary number of equal-sized words and the number of such words constituting a message is sent prior to sending the message. The specific embodiment relates to a processor controlled telephone exchange and the signalling employed between the processor and a buffer circuit serving a mixed group of individual circuits comprising a switching network. The messages between the processor and a buffer circuit comprise a number of sections each of the same bit length. The first section indicates the total number of sections constituting the message, the second and possibly also the third sections indicate the address of the network equipment to which the message relates, while the succeeding sections to a maximum of a further four comprise control data relative to processor work functions. In transmitting from a buffer to the processor reception of the message length indication is acknowledged by the processor to elicit the next section of the message and so on. Message length is recorded in both buffer and processor to determine the last section sent and received. In transmitting from the processor to a buffer, the processor sends the acknowledgment signal to prepare the buffer before sending each section of a message. Absence of acknowledgment signal or reception of data in illogical order results in fault signals. The exchange system is the same as that described in Specification 1,205,305.
