Abstract
1,205,681. Fuel elements. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. 13 Sept., 1968 [11 Oct., 1967], No. 43637/68. Heading G6C. A latch 11 for serially interlocking nuclear fuel bundles is annular in shape and has a flat bearing surface 12 and two diametrically opposed, groove defining portions 13, 14, the portion 13 defining a radially outwardly opening groove 13a and the portion 14 a radially inwardly opening groove 14a, the portions 13, 14 being laterally positioned on opposite sides of the bearing surface 12 such that a similar latch may be rested in the grooves of said latch with its bearing surface abutting that of said latch, whereby the two latches are restrained from axial separation. As shown, the latch 11 has two semicircular groove portions 13, 14, and is provided with an inner strut network 16 including radial members 17, 18 and an inner annular member 19, also two diametrically opposite sloping portions 21 which close off the groove 13a to its semicircular configuration. Radial members 17 interconnect groove portion 13 and annular member 19, while radial members 18 interconnect groove portion 14 and annular member 19. The radial members 17, 18 are accordingly curved slightly such that the annular member 19 is parallel to the bearing surface 12 but disposed between the lower arms 13b, 14b of the groove portions 13, 14. Fuel elements are welded to the undersides of arm 13b, inner strut network 16 and arm 14b such that they terminate in axially disposed planes. A more uniform neutron flux is thus provided across interconnecting latches than is the case where all the elements terminate in the same plane.
