Abstract

1,213,383. Switching systems for heating resistors. GENERAL MOTORS-HOLDEN’S PTY. Ltd. 15 Feb., 1968 [23 Feb., 1967], No. 7396/68. Heading H2H. A circuit for supplying an electric hot plate includes at least two heating elements which are connected in parallel for initial heating at a high rate, and are then automatically switched into a series arrangement for further heating at a lower rate. One of the elements may be deenergized during the initial heating. The circuit shown includes a regulator 2, heating elements 8, 9, and a relay 4 controlled by a bi-metallic timer 3. The regulator is switched on by closing a manual switch 6 which automatically closes a cycling switch 7. Momentarily, current flows through the elements 8 and 9 in series, but since contacts 11 in the timer 3 are closed, the relay 4 is actuated so as to close contacts 16 and 17, putting elements 8 and 9 in parallel for rapid heating of the plate. After a present time, the contacts 11 will open, de-energizing the relay 4, and so returning the elements to a series arrangement for the remainder of the desired cooking time. The cycling times of the switch 7 are determined by the user’s setting of the regulator 2, and are so arranged that, at settings below the maximum, the initial closed time of switch 7 is less than that of switch 11. This results in the latter part of the initial heating period involving heating only by the element 9.
