Abstract

1,213,427. Sensing records. BENDIX CORP. 1 April, 1969 [29 April, 1968], No. 16975/69. Heading G4M. An optical reader comprises a row of sensors each of which includes a fibre optic bundle partially split into two legs and a trunk, light from a source passing down one leg, being reflected by an indicium in registration with the end of the trunk and passing up the other leg to a photodetector. Preferably the fibres in the first and second legs are intermixed in the trunk and each detector circuit has an adjustable threshold. Ticket, Fig. 1, comprises several tear-off sections for use at different stages of a passenger’s journey. The sections include a clock track 250, a coded ticket number 251, a pair of key indicia 255a, 255b whose distance from clock track 250 identifies the particular ticket section, one or more fields 253, 254 in which up to three areas of the 26 available may be marked, and a four digit decimal field 252. Sensing apparatus. Fig. 2 (not shown).-Each row of a ticket section is scanned by a fibre optics bundle with an associated common illuminating source and individual detectors for the rows. A further detector is provided for detecting arrival of the ticket section at the sensing station to perform various reset functions. Circuit, Figs. 5, 6.-The sensor detecting the first key indicium 255a produces a signal on one of leads 337 to 340 to enable a group of AND gates 350-359 and 381-383, the particular group thus enabled providing an input path for the sensor outputs 389-398 to shift registers 360-369 corresponding to the rows present on the particular type of ticket section. The ticket number 251 is fed directly to a shift register 476 from sensor output 399. The shift registers 360-369 are clocked by alternate pulses derived from corresponding indicia sensed from the clock track 250, shift register 476 receiving all the clock pulses via OR gate 349. At the end of scanning of the ticket section; a counter supplied with the clock pulses enables a set of gates to compare the first key indicium 255a stored in a bi.stable circuit with the second key indicium 255b, and if the key indicia do not correspond an “invalid” lamp remains on. Data is read out of the shift registers by trains of pulses applied to them in turn from a timing circuit. The shift out pulses are also fed to a counter 417 the contents of which are gated into a shift register 430 when a data pulse is read out of a shift register on lead w. A further counter 427 counts the shift pulses and provides a parity bit for entry in shift register 430. The delayed data pulse triggers a counter 433 to generate a train of 6 pulses which advance a counter 418 and shift the contents of register 430. Subsequent data pulses in an alphabetic field are processed similarly, and at the end of the field, counter 418 is triggered by a timer pulse to advance to 18 and produce the corresponding number of pulses to shift register 430, so that over the complete field the register has advanced by three 6-bit characters even though one or more of these are all zero. Operation for the decimal fields is similar except that the shift-out pulses are applied to stage 421 of counter 417 since only 4 bits plus a parity bit are required, and the data pulses appear on lead y, counters 4331 and 4181 respectively producing trains of 5 pulses and counting up to 5. The ticket number, which already includes a parity bit, is entered directly at stage 430-5 of the register 430.
