Abstract
1,214,039. Starting and stopping fuel injection engines; controlling fuel-injection pumps. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. June 11, 1968 [June 16, 1967], No. 27771/68. Headings F1A and F1B. A starting and stopping device for a self-igniting fuel-injection type I.C. engine of a road or rail vehicle is combined with the usual key-operated cylinder-lock security switch for the electrical installation of the vehicle, whereby the lock cylinder is rotatable from a normal position secured by a catch, on the one hand, against a yieldable restoring force, into a preliminary heating position in which heating plugs are switched on and a starting position in which the starter is switched on, the preliminary heating is continued and the fuel injection pump is adjusted to deliver an excess quantity for starting, and on the other hand into a zero position in which the engine is stopped by interruption of the fuel delivery, the preliminary heating circuit being interrupted by a control device after a time delay. When the key of the cylinder lock, which may also constitute a steering-wheel lock, is turned beyond the normal position in which it closes the security switch 4, Fig.2, of the vehicle electrical installation, to a preliminary heating position in which it closes a switch 7, a capacitor 10 is changed via a relay winding 11 and the contacts 12b and heater coil 12a of a thermal time switch 12, the charge current operating the relay to move a contact 13 from the full-line position to the dash-line position to hold the relay on and energize heating plugs 14 and an indicator lamp 15. After a time delay due to the heating-up of the heater coil 12a, which is also a function of the external air temperature (and may be arranged to be also a function of the engine coolant temperature), contact 12b opens to deenergize the relay coil 11 and hence de-energize the heating plugs 14 and the lamp 15. When the lamp 15 is thus extinguished to indicate correct heating of the heating plugs 14, the key may be further turned to the starting position in which a switch 17 is closed to operate the starter 16 and re-energize the heater plugs 14 via the contact 13. In addition, the delivery-rate adjustment member 18, Fig. 13, of the fuel injection pump is adjusted to provide excess fuel delivery at starting. For this purpose, the starter solenoid 28 may operate a lever 44 through a cable 25b to turn a doublearmed lever 22
