Divided out of 1,218,364. Heading H3R. [Also in Division H1] A tuning circuit comprises a magneticallyvariable inductance 7 between the poles of a variable-field magnet 12. The inductance 7 (see Division H1) comprises a semi-conductor body provided at each end with current terminals and having on at least one main surface a dielectric layer carrying a plurality of metal strips arranged perpendicularly to the direction of main current flow through the semi-conductor. To complete the tuning circuit, the frequency of which is varied by adjusting the magnet current I, a capacitor 13 is provided, either in parallel with or in series with the inductance 7. A superheterodyne arrangement in which two magnetically-variable inductances (7), Fig. 16 (not shown), are positioned in the gap of a variable-field magnet (12) is also described.
