Abstract

1,221,985. Preparation of tetranuclear cyanines. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 31 July, 1968 [5 Sept., 1967], No. 36419/68. Heading C4P. [Also in Division G2] Tetranuclear cyanines having the formula wherein R1 and R1 each represents an alkyl or substituted alkyl group containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms or an aryl group, and may be the same or different, R2, R3 , R5 and R6 each represents an alkyl or aryl group, and may be the same or different, D and D1 each represents oxygen, sulphur or selenium, X represents an anion, d and q each represents zero or 1, and may be the same or different, n and p each represents zero, 1 or 2, and may be the same or different, m represents 1, 2 or 3, L represents a methine group or an alkyl-substituted or aryl-substituted methine group (provided that not more than one methine group in each (=L-L) n =, (-L=CH)m and (=L-L)p= group is substituted) and provided that in symmetrical dyes wherein m is 2 or 3 or in unsymmetrical dyes, -(-L=OH), n is -(CH= CH) m – , Z and Z1 each represents the non- metallic atoms necessary to complete a heterocyclic nucleus having 5 or 6 atoms in the heterocyclic ring containing the N atom shown, and may be the same or different, are prepared by condensing, in the presence of an acid acceptor, a dye having the general formula wherein R1, R2, R5, Z, d, L, n, D and X are as defined above, with a compound having the general formula wherein R7, R8 and R9 each represents the same or a different alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or with a compound having the general formula wherein L and R7 are as defined above; or with a compound having the general formula wherein R8 and R9 are as defined above and R10 represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or with a compound having the general formula wherein R11 and R12 each represents an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or an alkoxy group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or with a compound having the general formula wherein R3, R4, R6, Z1, L, D1, X0, q, p and m are as defined above, R13 represents an aryl group, and R14 represents hydrogen or a carboxylic acyl group. 2 – (2 – Anilinovinyl) – 3 – ethyl – 5 – (3 – ethyl- 2 – benzothiazolinylidene) – 4 – oxo – 1 – phenyl- 2-imidazolinium perchlorate is prepared from 3 – ethyl – 5 – (3 – ethyl – 2 – benzothiazolinylidene) – 2 – methyl – 4 – oxo – 1 – phenyl – 2 – imidazolinium perchlorate and ethyl isoformanilide.
