1,222,047. Magnetic recording and playback. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 20 Aug., 1969 [23 Sept., 1968], No. 41443/69. Heading G5R. Each of a plurality of magnetic heads, carried, e.g., in groups in shoes 14, 16, 18, 20, may be made operative by energizing a combination of selector channels individually associated with it, and each such combination includes one channel capable of replacement by a spare channel 55 to form a substitute combination rendering operative one of a plurality of spare heads in place of the selected head; this substitution is initiated by means of one of a plurality of gates 72, 78, 80, 82, selectively made operative, e.g. by the completion of jumper connections 68.
