Abstract

1,222,290. Polyvinyl chloride compositions. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 23 Dec., 1968 [26 Dec., 1967], No. 61078/68. Heading C3P. A curable composition comprises (a) polyvinyl chloride and a chlorinated polyolefin in a weight ratio of from 3 : 1 to 1 : 3 and 2 to 10% by weight of a polymer derived from ethylene, (b) a stabilizer for the chlorine containing polymers and (c) a curing agent. The composition may also contain an anti-oxidant such as 4,41 – thiobis – (6 – tert. – butyl – m – cresol) and, to enhance the cross-linking, triallyl cyanurate. Exemplified compositions are prepared from the following recipes (1) polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyethylene, lead oxide (stabilizer), polyethylene, carbon black, microcrystalline wax, di-α-cumyl peroxide, triallyl cyanurate and 4,41 – thiobis – (6 – tert. – butyl – m – cresol), and (2) polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyethylene, dibasic lead phthalate (stabilizer) di-α-cumyl peroxide and one of (a) polyethylene, (b) ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, and (c) ethylene-propylene copolymer. The cured compositions have properties that render them useful as electrical insulations, i.e. as the covering for cables.
