Abstract

1,222,323. Change-speed gear. RHEINSTAHL HUTTENWERKE A.G. 31 March, 1969 [6 April, 1968], No. 16803/69. Heading F2D. In a motor vehicle, a simple sun-ring-planet train 2 splits torque between input and output shafts an, ab, into a mechanical path and a hydrostatic path whereof the piston cylinder unit I is permanently driven through a wheel pair 6, 5 by a reaction ring gear 4 of the train, whilst the communicating piston-cylinder unit II is clutched at 8 to the output shaft ab at speeds below a change-point at which the ring-gear 4 ceases to rotate forwardly and begins to rotate reversely, and clutched at 81 to the input shaft an above that change-point, the arrangement being subject to a control responsive to input speed, accelerator position of the driving I.C. engine (torque factor) and a feeler 37 detecting the change of direction of the reaction ring gear 4, whereby the inclination of the swash-plates 14 of both units, and the clutch change are all atuomatically controlled, preferably to follow minimum fuel consumption lines of the engine. A practical embodiment, Fig. 7, not shown, has two pairs of units I, I1, and II, II1, grouped circumferentially around the gear train and operated in unison by the arrangement shown. An engine-driven pump 25 supplies servo pressure 27 to shift the clutches 8, 81 and swashplates 14, and input-speed responsive pressure on opposite sides of a piston 24 by pressuredrop across a delivery orifice 30. Speed-responsive rightward movement of the piston 24 is opposed by a spring 31 loaded by the engine accelerator pedal 34 (torque factor) and the piston actuates a valve 33 supplying servopressure 27 through a manual change-over reversing valve 36 to opposite sides of a servopiston rack 22 which, through a pinion 21, cranks and connecting rods 20, and servopistons 19, adjusts the swash-plates 14 in a sequence (Fig. 9, not shown) related to the clutch change-over. The latter is performed by a servo piston 39, energized through a two-way valve 38, actuated by a feeler 37 which is pivoted one way or the other according to the direction of rotation of the underlying toothed wheel 6 connected to the ring gear 4 of the planet train.
