Abstract

1,226,706. Fluid-pressure actuated switches; contacts. GULF GENERAL ATOMIC Inc. 27 Feb., 1969 [13 March, 1968], No. 10610/69. Heading H1N. In a contact system, particularly for use in discharging heavy currents, a plurality of separate conductor elements 204, Figs. 8, 9, engageable with a fixed contact 210 are backed by a resilient member 212 of plastic material which applies equal hydrostatic-like pressure to each of the elements 204 to equalize the contact resistances of all the elements 204. In the example of Figs. 8, 9, pressure is applied to the member 212 by a plunger 214 engaged through an aperture 216 in the contact carrier 200 which totally encloses the material 212. Alternatively the rubber or plastic material may have an internal cavity filled with fluid to which pressure is applied from an external source. In modifications the conductor elements may surround a central contact and are mounted within an enclosed annulus of rubber or plastic material to which the pressure applied. In a further modification the movable contacts comprise a multiplicity of flat plates 31, Fig. 5, mounted in a carrier 36 to which the contact closing force is applied. The force is distributed between the plates 31 as by fluid 68 in a resilient enclosed vessel 66 or by rubber or plastic material which may be faced with a layer of harder material and may be bonded within the carrier 36. The force may be applied to the carrier 36 from a fluid-actuated ram 102, Fig. 7, driving a rectilinearly moving cam 108 engageable with a roller 116. The cam 108 has a region 120 providing an initial quick movement for closing the contacts and a region 125 for applying a large force to the roller 116 to compress the resilient material in the contact carrier 30.
