Abstract

1,227,097. Making self-locking threaded members. C. H. HANFLAND. 25 Sept., 1969, No. 47147/69. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F2] A method of making a self-locking threaded member includes heating a threaded workpiece where the self-locking portion is required and effecting deformation of the heated area. A plain nut may have one end radially inwardly upset or a transverse slit 5 is cut to form a flap 6. The flap is heated and pressed in the direction of the arrow 8a. Alternatively the thread at one end of the nut is upset axially. In other embodiments, the nuts are formed with axially extending collars, which may be slit axially and deformed radially and/or axially. A bolt 1m has its thread 9m upset axially to form a depression 16. In a further embodiment a nut may have a threaded insert of a different material to its body, the deformation being carried out after insertion of the insert.
