Abstract

1,229,068. Digital transmission systems. NETHERLANDS POSTAL & TELECOMMUNICATION SERVICE, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF. 29 April, 1969 [10 May, 1968], No. 21806/69. Heading H4P. In a digital transmission system in which errors are corrected by requested repetition, reduction in the useful character rate on the transmission channel owing to the repetitions is at least partially compensated by making the actual rate on the channel higher than the character rate of the overall system. As characters are received from the channel at a greater rate than they are delivered to the output printer a buffer store precedes the printer. To prevent the buffer from overflowing idle signals are transmitted when necessary. Transmitter.-5-bit characters read from a store are passed to a radio transmission channel at a character rate V#a. Each time a character is read out a counter is incremented. The counter is decremented by clock pulses at a rate equal to the rate Va at which characters are read from the receiver buffer to the printer. The instantaneous count consequently represents the number of characters in the receiver buffer at the corresponding point in the received sequence of characters. If the count reaches 5 the buffer will be full. To prevent overflow, read out from the store is stopped while an idle signal is transmitted. Receiver.-The received signals, except idle signals, are passed to the first stage of a shift register buffer which has 5 stages, each of which can store one character. A counter is incremented at rate V#a and decremented at rate Va, as at the transmitter, and causes the appropriate stage of the buffer to be read to a shift register which passes serial-bit characters at rate Va to the printer. In the event of an isolated 4-character repetition cycle the printer will receive an uninterrupted flow of characters, characters being supplied from the buffer during the 4-character period in which input to the buffer is prevented.
