Abstract

1,229,247. Polymerization catalysts. INTERNATIONAL LEAD ZINC RESEARCH ORGANIZATION Inc. 20 June, 1968 [20 June, 1967], No. 29455/68. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C3] A catalyst composition comprises (i) a dialkyl zinc, (ii) a co-catalyst which is water, an alcohol or an amine, for example a secondary amine, and (ii) a stabilizing agent having the general formula: wherein Ar represents a monocarbocyclicaryl radical, either unsubstituted or substituted by one or more halogen atoms or nitro, alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxyalkyl radicals, R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, cycloalkyl or monocarbocyclicaryl radical, and R’ represents an alkyl, monocarbocyclicaryl, alkoxy, monocarbocyclicaryloxy or carbamate radical. Each alkyl radical of the dialkyl zinc may be a methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, tertiary butyl, pentyl, isopentyl or higher hydrocarbon radical; the dialkyl zinc may be diethyl zinc, dipropyl zinc, di-isobutyl zinc or di-isopentyl zinc. When an alcohol, the cocatalyst may be methanol, n-butanol or phenol; when an amine, the co-catalyst may be nbutylamine or diphenylamine. The radical Ar of the stabilizing agent may be a phenyl radical, either unsubstituted or substituted by a chlorine atom or a nitro, methyl, methoxy or hydroxymethyl radical; numerous suitable stabilizing agents are listed in the Specification. The catalyst composition also may contain a solvent, for example pentane, hexane or toluene, and may be formed by mixing, in any order, the components (i), (ii) and (iii) and, if present, the solvent. The catalyst composition may be used as catalyst in the polymerization of an aldehyde by a process which comprises contacting the aldehyde with the catalyst composition at a temperature of -40‹C or below, for example -78‹C, in the absence of oxygen. The aldehyde may be unsubstituted, for example acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde or butyraldehyde, or substituted, for example trichloroacetaldehyde; a mixture of two or more aldehydes may be polymerized. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,229,248.
