[Also in Division C5] An oligomerisation catalyst comprises:- (1) a nickel compound having the formula: (a) Ni(PR 3 ) 4 , (b) Ni(PR 3 ) 2 (CH 3 =CHR1) (c) Ni(PR 3 ) 3 or (d) Ni(PR 3 ) 3 X wherein R is principally C 1 -C 8 alkyl or C 6 -C 12 aryl but may have other meanings for each of (a) (b) (c) or (d) and X is Cl, Br or I; and (2) AlCl 3 or AlBr 3 , and optionally (3) a compound PR 3 wherein R is a C 1 -C 8 alkyl, C 6 -C 12 cycloalkyl or aryl, piperidyl, dialkylamino, alkoxy, aryloxy group or chlorine. Preferred nickel components are Ni(PPR 3 ) 4 , Ni(Pn-Bu 3 ) 4 , Ni(PCl 3 ) 4 , Ni(PPR 3 ) 2 CH 2 =CH 2 , and Ni(PPR 3 ) 3 Cl. The other components are preferably AlCl 3 Cl 3 and PPR 3 ; a tertiary aliphatic amine such as triethylamine may also be present.
