Abstract
1,231,242. Blackening iron or steel. THOMAS WALKER Ltd. June 2, 1969 [April 5, 1968], No.16380/68. Heading C7U. In the “blacking” of small iron or steel workpieces in bulk involving treatment in a caustic blacking bath for a predetermined time at 280‹F. to 320‹F. the workpieces are first loaded into a rotatably mounted perforated barrel which is then pre-heated and immersed in the caustic blacking bath whilst being caused to revolve to ensure uniform mixing of the workpieces with the treating solution. In Fig. 1, the first of three tanks, all of which are gas-heated at 14 as shown, is filled with water, and acts as a pre-heater for perforated barrel 15 and the workpieces. Barrel 15 is transferred by hoist 26 to blacking tank 11, and carrier frame 18 seats on bracket 19 such that motor 25, via 23 and 20, rotates the barrel, and on completion of treatment, e.g. with caustic alkali and an oxidizing agent, the barrel 15 is transferred by hoist 26 to rinsing bath 12.
