Abstract
1,231,385. Metal – containing materials. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 24 July, 1968 [4 Aug., 1967], No. 35824/67. Heading C1A. Metal-containing material is produced by forming a mixture of a hydrous metal oxide sol and an organic polymeric material soluble in the sol, forming the said mixture into an entity of particular physical configuration (e.g. into a rod by extruding or into spheroids by dropping) and contacting the said entity with a precipitating agent to convert the entity to a metalcontaining gel. The gel produced may be calcined to remove the polymer and form metal oxide spheres. Oxides mentioned are those of U, Al, Ti, Fe, Zr, Pb and Ce, and if the initial sol contains SiO 2 particles, this will reappear in the products. More than one metal may be present. The organic polymeric material may be a polyhydroxy compound (e.g. dextran, carob gum, polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose derivatives or starches), polycarboxylic compound or polyamine compound (e.g. gelatine). The precipitating agent may be NH 3 , in solution or as gas, and if in solution may contain a ” viscosity increasing additive ” to increase the time of fall of drops through it. The corresponding metal carbide may be formed by adding carbon to the metal oxide sol with the polymer, and heating the gel subsequently formed in an inert atmosphere.
