Abstract
1,232,028. Making valve bags. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 Aug., 1968 [21 Aug., 1967], No. 38464/67. Heading B5D. In a machine for making valve bags such as disclosed in Specification 1,211,696 a folded web 16, Fig. 8, of heat-sealable plastics film has overlapping valve panels 21 sealed along the open edges at 17 and 26 to form a tube. Gussets are formed at the sides of the tube by wheels 27, 28, 30 and V-shaped and transverse seals made. The plastics web is advanced in units of one bag width by drive rollers 33 which are governed by a photo-electric cell responding to marks printed on the film web. The tube is then cut into separate bags. Alternatively the machine can be arranged to form pillow-type bags. Valve panel insertion.-Film from reel 19, Fig. 10, overlaps thinner film from reel 18 at roller 43 and both pass through a sealing device 20 to join them at the overlap. The sealer 20 consists of a heat sealing element 45 which acts against an anvil attached to plate 50 and is activated by an air piston and cylinder 48 acting against springs 49. The sealed film passes between metering rollers 51, 52, each of which mesh together by spur gears 57, 58, Fig. 12, and are rotatably mounted on freely rotating shaft 53 and fixed shaft 54 respectively by unidirectional clutches 83, 84. The draft 53 is driven by a pinion 76 and rack 75 the extremity of which carries a rod 80 and adjustable collar 81 coacting with stop 82 to limit the throw of the rack 75 and thus meter the plastics film. The rack 75 is activated by air cylinder 77. Each end of shaft 53 carries spur gears 59 which engage racks 60 sliding in guide 61 to advance a film support plate 62 when the metering rollers discharge a length of valve panel. The film then advances between clamping element 63 and cutting member 65 until the edge lies over the anvil 86 and underneath the edge of the lower layer of the web 16 and the trailing edge of the preceeding valve panel 21. The leading edge of the valve panel is then heat sealed to the edge of the lower ply web 16 by element 87 acting against the anvil 86 and actuated by air cylinders 92, 93 through the frame 88. Air cylinder 67 clamps member 63 against the cutting member 65 and air cylinder 74 actuates a knife 70 to cut off the panel to the required length. The web 16 is advanced and a folding device 24, Fig. 8, folds the valve panel 21 over the upper layer of the web 16, to be heat sealed thereto at 25 by element 26 acting on former plate 22.
