Abstract

1,232,238. Pistons. CONTINENTAL AVIATION & ENG. CORP. 19 July, 1968 [20 July, 1967], No. 34435/68. Heading F2T. A variable compression ratio piston in an I.C. engine comprises outer and inner relatively movable members 12, 14 defining first and second chambers 30, 32 which vary oppositely in volume in response to movement of the members, the first chambers being arranged to discharge into the second chamber at a predetermined pressure and into the crank case through a secondary discharge 118 upon a greater predetermined pressure. Oil is fed to the chamber 30 via the connecting rod, an oil collector 47 and a triangular-shaped non-return valve plate 88. An orifice 126 controls leakage of oil from the chamber 32, the leakage permitting the outer member 12 of the piston to move upwardly a small distance on each engine cycle. When the gas pressure exceeds the upper limit a discharge valve 106 lifts to pass oil into the chamber 32 via a non-return ball valve 66. The secondary discharge 118 is controlled by a needle valve 116 carried by a plate 120 and set to open against the action of a spring 122 to allow rapid discharge of oil and downward movement of the outer member 12 relative to the inner when the gas pressure is suddenly increased. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the discharge valve at the chamber 30 is combined with the non-return valve for the chamber 32, the secondary discharge passage (238) being arranged between the valve members to discharge the volume of oil in excess of that required by the chamber (32) when the gas pressure exceeds the predetermined value; the leakage of oil from the chamber (32) is controlled by an orifice (240).
