[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Catalyst compositions comprise the admixture of (a) a complex of formula [(L) a M b Z c ] x where M is Mo, W, MoO, MoO 2 , WO, WO 2 , (L) is CO, R 3 Q, R 3 QO, R 2 Q-QR 2 , or R2(COO-) m where Q=P, As or Sb; Z is halogen, CN, SCN, OCN or SnCl 3 ; a is 1-6, b is 1 or 2, c is 0-5 m is 1 or 2 and x is integer representing polymeric state of the complex; a+b+c= coordination state of the metal; R is a saturated hydrocarbon optionally containing alkoxy and halo of up to 20 carbon atoms, R2 is saturated or ethenically unsaturated hydrocarbon up to 30 carbon atoms and (b) an Al containing adjuvant selected from (1) one or more of R e AlX f , (2) one or more of R’ g M’X h , (3) AlX 3 , or (4) a mixture of (1) or (3) with (2), wherein R’ is R or H, M’ is metal of Group IA, IIA, IIIA or IIB, e is 1-2, f is 1-2, e+f=3, g is 1-3, h is 0-2, g+h= valence of M’. Many examples of complexing agents, starting compounds of Mo and W (usually halides) and Al containing compounds of (b). Catalysts may be used in vapour phase on supports such as SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 -A 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , B 2 O 3 , zeolites, ion exchange resins or solid polymers.
